At the turn of the nineteenth century, the Pilsner-style beers were becoming more and more popular thanks to their lightness and good drinkability. Belgian breweries began to lose their positions on markets in the neighboring countries, hence they decided to act by adjusting the Belgian Strong Ale recipe by giving it a weaker body.. Even though they lost this fight to lagers, they created a new, nowadays very popular beer style, which has become, under constant change, an integral part of the Belgian beer spectrum. Every brewery would accommodate the recipe a little and many add even today a traditional mixture of spices known as Gruid, without disclosing its composition. It is these carefully combined ingredients that are at the bottom of the secret of the individual uniqueness of the Belgian breweries. Spices as diverse as anise, fennel, coriander, star anise, cardamom, cloves, pepper, even cinnamon, when properly dosed, underline this beer’s typical Belgian aromatic profile and render it ever more striking. Our Belgian Blond Ale 15° is a deep-fermented beer with ABV of over 8%, typical Belgian spicy aroma and sweetish taste of pale Belgian caramel. And yes indeed, we too, did concoct a mixture of seasonings in our ‘alchemist laboratory’ and thusly brought our Blond Ale to perfection. Will you be able to identify the spices we used? Even if you guess right, however, we shall not concede the contents of our secret mixture. The most important thing remains that you enjoy the beer!
