This beer style was born in 1907 in Germany as a response to the increasing popularity of a very strong amber to dark colored lager – doppelbock. Weizenbier-oriented breweries were losing their customers and thus Mathilda Schneider, the widow of headbrewer Georg III Schneider, combined this two styles in the heart of Bavarian Schneider Weisse brewery and created the weizenbock. After more than 100 years, this beer style is being reborn in small craft breweries all around the world. The beer has a pale or brown version, both with complex and rich character. Sweet notes of banana, clove and vanilla typical for weizenbier blend together with a heavy maltiness and warming alcohol of a doppelbock. The beer is full-bodied and thanks to an abundance of wheat protein and suspended yeast it can be considered a liquid bread, although very drinkable.
