After the English-French conflicts in the 18th century and the subsequent French embargo, the English aristocracy remained cut off from its favorite Bordeaux wine. The English brewers therefore created a substitute in the form of an extremely strong beer, which, due to its high alcohol content, was called Barley Wine, available exclusively for the high society. A similar beer style, although accidentally, appeared in 1988 at Californian Rubicon Brewing Company, when too much wheat went into the barley wine mash. The result became, however, so popular that the new creation – Wheatwine began to appear regularly. This beer has a full, delicate, creamy body and a pleasant residual sweetness that is evenly balanced with American hops so that a grainy, malty flavor prevails. Warming tones of alcohol complement the palete with a background of strawberries or tropical fruit.
